Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Oxygen is the element most vital to sustaining human life. More essential than food or water, oxygen feeds the body and provides protection against a variety of harmful agents. This essential element gives an athlete stamina, helps the injured heal and protects from environmental toxins. Oxygen provides the fuel needed by the brain to function properly and it helps the body fight off infection by boosting the immune system.

Mild hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a method of increasing oxygen intake by exposing the body to oxygen at a higher than normal atmospheric pressure, causing a super saturation of oxygen in the plasma and tissue fluids.

What is the benefit of increased oxygen levels in the body?

There are several benefits to mild hyperbaric oxygen, including:

  • provides the fuel needed by the brain to function properly
  • helps the body to fight off infection by boosting the immune system
  • assists in post operative healing and sporting injury recovery
  • aids in the treatment of chronic disease and maximizes the benefits of other
    modalities
  • promotes accelerated and enhanced wound healing
  • decreases post-operative inflammation and infection and encourages
    normal healing processes
  • is an adjunctive therapy in sports medicine to accelerate recovery for
    athletes.
  • improves strength, energy and endurance
  • relieves tension and stress
  • improves concentration and memory
  • detoxifies the blood
  • promotes healing and counters ageing
  • strengthens heart and lungs
  • natural remedy for headaches and migraines
  • improves metabolism and aids digestion
  • reduces fatigue and improves sleeping patterns
  • relieves muscle stiffness
  • improves skin conditions

Chronic Conditions
Who needs Hyperbaric Therapy and what can be treated with it?

Thousands of people have had dramatic and, in many instances, life changing improvements in their conditions because of mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Reasons to use hyperbaric chambers vary. People suffering from chronic and/or debilitating diseases such as:

  • ADHD
  • Autism
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Dementia
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Lyme Disease
  • Parkinsons
  • Fibromyalgia
  • MS
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Diabetic and ischemic wounds
  • Allergies
  • Gut issues
  • Sleep problems
  • Stress
  • Migraines

as well as many others have experienced benefits in utilising hyperbaric therapy. Currently there are over 80 conditions successfully treated with this therapy world-wide.

Functional and cognitive abilities can respond positively to treatment. Saturating the body with oxygen can boost the immune system, increase brain and neural function, and help cells and tissues heal and perform effectively. Because oxygen deficiency is often overlooked it is not seen as being a cause of chronic illness. Some symptoms that may result from oxygen depletion include: premature ageing, depression, fatigue, dullness and a general feeling of sluggishness. If the imbalance is chronic, the immune system is weakened, and we are more susceptible to long term chronic illnesses.

Mild HBOT for sports recovery

HBOT is an excellent aid in sports preparation and recuperation. It may help speed up recovery from sports injuries, provide faster recuperation from workouts, increase energy and mental clarity as well as general health, leading to improved performance.

HBOT acts in 2 ways… the increased pressure inside the chamber decreases swelling at the same time increasing the blood flow to restricted areas. The higher concentration of oxygen in the bloodstream allows the rate of healing and repair to occur much faster.

Although fairly newly recognised in Australia, HBOT has become a widely popular performance enhancing strategy among professional athletes overseas and amongst professional Australian athletes, particularly in the AFL, rugby and cricket teams.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is popular in sports preparation, recovery and overall wellness. It may assist with some neurological conditions and cognitive improvement. It is safe and side effects are very rare.

Is it safe?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a safe, drug-free therapy that can be used regularly without any danger of oxygen toxicity. Thousands of people have had dramatic and in many instances life changing improvements in their conditions because of using mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Proponents for hyperbaric therapy include numerous doctors, health care providers and individuals for whom this therapy has been beneficial.

No dangerous side effects have been reported with mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy, however, some individuals can experience a few minor contraindications such as slight fatigue as the body detoxifies (this is safe and necessary). A person can also experience a mild discomfort to the ears when pressurising the chamber similar to the experience of ascending or descending in an aircraft.

What does the treatment involve?

Mild HBOT is completely natural, safe and well tolerated, with very few side effects. Sinus or ear pain may be experienced and can usually be relieved by using the same techniques when flying in a plane such as swallowing or opening and closing your mouth wide. ‘Ear Planes’ purchased from a chemist may also assist. The chamber is inflated and then pressurised while you breathe high levels of oxygen through an oxygen face mask supplied via an oxygen concentrator. Claustrophobia may be experienced by those susceptible to confinement anxiety. Any other side effects are rare with mild HBOT but it’s advised to raise any concerns with us and consult your doctor. chemist may also assist.

Because you will be fully clothed during the treatment, it is recommended you wear loose, comfortable clothing. The chamber inflates within one minute and upon full inflation there will be enough room to sit upright or to lie down comfortably. There is enough room for 2 people to be in the chamber at the same time. After the inflation, the chamber will pressurise, and this is a similar feeling to ascending or descending in a plane. Once at full pressure, you just breathe normally. You may take a book or magazine into the chamber, meditate, listen to music, go on your laptop or simply sleep.

Depending on your personal health goal, each treatment usually lasts for one or 1.5 hours and you can carry on with your day as normal.

How many treatments will I need?

Mild HBOT is a cumulative therapy and the number of treatments you may wish to complete depends on your condition. There is no requirement for a doctors referral and you’re free to book sessions as you wish. The optimum manufacturer-recommended protocol for these portable chambers is to complete your first 5 sessions within 7 – 10 days, after which they may be required less frequently. But ultimately you know your own body best, and so we allow you to choose your appointment scheduling based on what you feel is appropriate for you and your sense of wellness.

Hyperbaric Chambers & Brain Disorders

HBOT has been shown to improve oxygenation, new blood cell formation (angiogenesis) and new nerve growth (neurogenesis) in the brain (1) Most conditions which results in inflammation in the body can benefit from HBOT.(2)

We all depend upon the consumption of oxygen all the time. Most atmospheric air is comprised of roughly 21% oxygen. Oxygen is necessary for the production of cellular energy in the mitochondria of every cell in the body. The use of 97% oxygen in a pressured atmosphere has been shown to have extraordinary health benefits.
